Rainbow Country at a Glance
Known for its abundance of lakes and islands, Rainbow Country is centrally situated
in Ontario and is home
to Sudbury, French
River, Manitoulin Island
and Parry Sound. Cruise through
the Georgian Bay's 30,000 islands, a designated UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve
featuring thousands of granite islands sculpted by glaciers. In July, Parry Sound
hosts the Festival
of the Sound, a nationally recognized classical music festival. Nearby, Killbear
Provincial Park is known for its spectacular sailing and windsurfing. Espanola
and Killarney
feature scenic locales for camping amidst waterfalls and forests. Lake
Manitou, located on Manitoulin Island, is the world's largest lake within
a freshwater island and is ideal for fishing. The island, home to six Ojibwa reserves,
offers sailing, biking, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. Sudbury provides
restaurants, theatres and museums. In the late 1960s, astronauts Neil Armstrong
and Buzz Aldrin used its rough terrain to train for their famous moonwalk.
